MOSTLY DANCE

Reflections by JoAnne Tucker

Edited by Kezia Gleckman Hayman

From the time I loved dancing to my grandmother’s music as a toddler, to today, dance has been a key part of my life. Dance fills me with joy. Dance connects me to the universe and fuels my creative energy, giving meaning to my life.  It is through being creative that I find a way to contribute and serve.

Join me on my journey as I share moments from a very rich and full life as dancer, choreographer, teacher, and founder/director of The Avodah Dance Ensemble, a New York based modern dance company, which I directed for over 30 years. My purpose in sharing is to serve as a model for others — to encourage each of us to find our strong voice as artists whether in dance, music, or the visual arts so we can help each other make this a stronger, more peaceful world.

My first creative language is dance and it has had a strong influence on my painting and filmmaking and I look forward to sharing how it has impacted me in these areas

Collaborating with other choreographers, musicians, visual artists and most importantly dancers is a very important part of the story.  These are my memories and thoughts. If you were part of one of the pieces or projects, I hope you will share your thoughts and memories too, and if you weren’t but find things that resonate for you, I hope you will also add comments (again with the purpose of encouraging the creative endeavors of others to make this a better planet)!!

I chose to do this as a blog rather than a book because honoring collaboration is central to my belief that together we can lift our human spirit and dance joyfully together.
